Leather bag completed!

I have another leather bag to show off that I just finished!
I start with a piece of leather that I cut, etched the design in a pyrography method. Then dyed, colored and sealed. It is hand stitched together with a heavy, waxed cord. Metal hardware and snap closure is attached. Metal chain with a leather strap for handle.
Size measures: 10 1/2 inches wide x 11 1/2 inches tall.

Number 2 Leather Handbag completed!!

Yeah! I just finished handbag #2. I really love making these bags.

I call it "Seeing Stars!"

There are 6 tooled stars on the front and 6 tooled stars on the back.

The closure is a simple leather strap that slips into a leather loop that is riveted onto the bag.

Completely made from a large piece of 1/8 inch thick leather hide.

That I cut from my pattern, tooled, turquoise color added,

dyed, stained and sealed.

I then laced the bag up with white leather lacing.

The dimensions are:

12 inches wide

8 1/2 inches tall

3 inches deep.

The strap measures 34 inches long. With hand stamped stars. The handbag hangs nicely at your side.

My "Blaue Blume" tote is complete!

Here is my first go at making a leather hand tooled tote. I am very pleased with the way it turned out.
I call it "Blaue blume" which means "blue flower" in German.
It is made from a thick leather, approximately 1/8 inch thick.
I made the pattern, then cut it out from the leather. I then hand tooled the design.
The flowers aka "blume" are hand painted in a sky blue with periwinkle accents. The bird and butterflies in the back panel are a deep yellow.
I then dyed, antiqued and sealed the tote.
It is all hand laced in a medium brown leather lace.
There is a 21 inch long strap with tooled flowers, that is removable.
The closure is a leather strap. Attached with rivet's on the back and a snap on the front.
The size of this tote is:
11.5 inches tall, 10 inches wide, 3 inches deep.

This tote is ready to go!

It took me most of the day to do it, but I am fairly pleases with the results ;)

Here I am starting another project :)

When we were in San Antonio a few weeks ago,

I purchased some leather at a Tandy's Store.

I have been working on a pattern. This is the major pieces to it.

Cutting into this massive piece of leather was as fearful as when I cut into mohair for the first time. Very afraid that I would mess up and ruin this expensive material.

So I went for it!

I splurged and bought myself some fiscar left handed scissors.

What a waste of money...

First, they were way to long to cut something this thick of leather. Second, I could not get use to the way they cut as for a lefty as I am. For so many years in school and even when I was a hairdresser, I never used left handed scissors. Probably never will again...

So I ended up using a zacto knife with a metal ruler.

It really was easier than with the scissors.

I have hand tooled the front piece of the tote and added color and dye.

Will post a pic of the front piece shortly.

Working with leather!

While on vacation, my hubby bought me a new tooled leather purse. I love it! So, the crafty person I am, I thought I could do that! Well, we found a Tandy Leather Company and bought a beginners kit. This is my first attempt at leather tooling. It's a coaster. I am fairly pleased with it. But now I have been bitten by the bug and want to do bigger projects. Maybe a clutch, then a purse ;-)
So, off to the internet to see where I can purchase larger pieces of leather!

I am pretty happy with the way she came out.

Pinkie is made from a rayon viscose and cotton materials.
With buttons and embroidery decorations.

She was designed more in the doll/softie style, non-jointed and plumply filled with polyfiber.

When to change.........

Sometimes I think about changing my direction of teddy bear making. Not to remove myself from it, but maybe a change of designs and approachability.
Since my accident, I was not able to keep up with the ongoing struggle to have a teddy available on a regular basis. When you can not keep up, your collectors just move on or loose interest. My bears involve much attention to detail. I don't know if I have slipped away from this because of the pain and difficulty that I experience while I am making my bear. I do know that I give it my best effort that I have to make my teddies. And now, when I do have a bear available, it just dose not move like they use to. Or it does not move at all. Who knows, maybe it has a lot to do with the state of the economy right now. But I do know that I see some other artists that are still making sales. Mostly because I believe that they have kept on producing their work and doing all that needs to be done to have a successful business.
With that said, today I have been drawing up a new style/design for a teddy bear. It falls along the line of the plush meets doll design. I plan on adding as much detail as I possibly can muster up! Without the struggle and pain I previously would receive.
I'll try and report back as often as possible on my new way of tackling this situation.
I am looking forward to using my ideas and creating adorable stuffed fuzzy, furry, gifts for you and your friends <3

Holidays.....

Just not the same. It was a pretty quite Easter Day here.
The kids were out of town. Don't have my parents to call and tell them Happy Easter to anymore.....

James has been working on a new shower installation in his bathroom. We had a close call Saturday. James was soldering some copper pipes on the bathroom concrete floor. He was trying to adjust the tip of propane torch and it came apart from the stem. Gas fumes began to come out in a large amount and set fire. I heard him yelling. I ran back and all I could see is him on the floor with flames a couple feet high, trying to put out the flames with a wet towel that he had there. I went to get the fire extinguisher. When I got back he had it out. He said when he tried to put the flames out with the towel, it held the gas fumes underneath and just worsened it. He was pretty shaken up. Has a burn with blisters on the top of his hand and thumb. He says it was'nt to bad. But it scared the "bahebajas" out of me!

Bierocks (Cabbage Roll) recipe

2 lbs ground beef
1 large head of cabbage or 2 small chopped fine
1 large onion
crisco shortning
2 boxes of hot roll mix. Some use home made bread dough. But this works in a pinch.
salt and pepper to taste

In a large pot, melt a heaping tbl spoon of crisco.
Then add by layers.
Ground beef, cabbage, chopped onion, then ground beef etc. untill all is in the pot.
Stir occasionally so it dont burn. Add more crisco if needed. It's ok to have at least 2 inches of oil in the pan.
You will need to keep adding salt and pepper as it cooks. Cook untill cabbage is tender and meat is done.
While the filling is cooking, make your hot roll mixes.
Take a piece of your dough around the size of a plum. Roll it into a square. Take a large slotted spoon loaded with the filing and press against the side of the pan to remove excess grease.

In my oppinion, if you take off to much of the grease, they tend to be on the dry side. Drop it in the center of the rolled out dough. Bring up the 4 corners to the center and pinch the edges closed. Make sure they are pinched closed real good or it will leak out onto the pan when it is cooked. When you have all the sides closed turn it over and place in a greased pan seam side down. cover with dish towel and let rise. Usually around 20 to 30 minutes. Bake in 350 oven till brown.
I usuall end up with around 20 to 24 rolls. Depending on how big I make them ;-)

Thinking POSITIVE!

I am working on thinking positive today. After a mean fall hurting my shoulder to the point where I can not lift my arm to the table... As I rest it, the pain lessens and the movement has improved. Having hurt this arm before, my dominate arm of course, it was a torn rotator cuff. I just re-injured it. What is really crazy about the whole thing is it was the first time this summer I had decided to get into the pool. While stepping down forward on the ladder, I slipped and did not let go of the ladder rail. Pulling my arms behind me to the point where I heard my shoulder make a cracking sound three times.
But as I said when I started this post, "POSITIVE THINKING" and prayer will help me get through this, again...

Yeppers, I am working on a new open-mouth panda bear. I am very happy with how it is coming along so far. It's going to be a little bigger (around 18") than I have been making. I use to make this size alot before. Kinda nice to be wrestling with the bigger bruins again ;-)
My arm has been giving me some problems this weekend though. The more I use it, the swelling seems to come back around the scar. With the occasional needle sticking feelings. I'm just so thankful that I have full use of my arm.....

She was made from a new pattern with a slight bend at her knees and a rounder tummy…

Tia is a petite 14 inches tall, and made from a gorgeous honey tan with dark backing mohair.

Her eyes are black glass with needle felted, airbrushed and hand painted accents.

Her nose is black stitched with a hard shiny lacquer finish. Tia’s tongue and upper mouth is wool felt.

Her paw pads are too wool felt with stitching and airbrushing.

Around her neck I crocheted her a poinsettia necklace.

Tia is five way jointed with cotter pin and washer,

and filled with polyfiber andcopper bb’s in her bottom for added weight.

Another Doodle for Redwork

This one is of a little German Bear. I then cleaned it up with photoshop. Idea taken from a cookie & craft mold I purchased the last time we were in Fredericksburg.
I bought it at my favorite store there, "Der Kuchen Laden," ~~Love It~~

I'm actually just about finished with the redwork embroidery. Trying to decide if I want to make him a pillow or frame it into a pic. Maybe I might add some writing in German like, "Willkommen,"(Welcome) or "Zuckerbär"(Sugar Bear).

With it being a cloudy dreary day. I've been in the mood for drawing. Here is a dancing bear I came up with. I think he is pretty neat. I'm going to transfer it onto some muslin and do some redwork embroidery with him.

My German Grandmother would be proud.... I have discovered "redwork" embroidery. I drew out a little pic, transfered it onto some linen and stitched her up into a little pillow. I loved doing it. It really did not bother my hurt arm to bad. That was a welcome relief. What do you think? I cant wait to get started on another one ;-)

Today is a good day! My arm is doing a little better. I have had a gazillion ideas going through this mind of mine. It feels like I have stretched it beyond it's capability. I have been working here and there on an open-mouth bear. I've tried so hard to work on her. And only could get so far. Without the pain to begin. I'm going to work on her again this afternoon. I seem to be jumping from one project to another. I have my bear, two different amigurumi crochet critters. A crochet scarf, wrist warmers, Kanzashi fabric flowers, and so much more.....I need to get some pics and post them.

Not sure how I feel...

It's really hard to explain how I am feeling tonight. I worked this weekend on updating my website. It went well. I am happy how it turned out. My problem seems to be my arm... of course. I worked on my bear today. It seems to be ok while I am working. It hits me, the pain that is, at night. At days end when I begin to relax, the swelling sets in and the sharp needle sticking pain throughout my forearm and elbow begins. The more the days pass by, the more intense the pain becomes. All I can guess is that the nerves are trying to heal from the trauma. Ten weeks have passed. I thought it would be better by now.....

Fabric Rosettes Cake Topper!

Some of you know that I have another hobby that I love, baking! This last Wednesday was my in-laws 65th wedding anniversary. Of course I had to make their cake. I also, made and designed the cake topper. It is made from fabric rosettes. It was so enjoyable to make. I have decided to add them as another item to my etsy shop. Things here have been coming along pretty good. I have begun cutting out a new mohair open mouth teddy bear. I'll continue to work on it as long my arm will allow. I still have numbness and needle stabbing pain around my elbow and forearm. Here we are at 9 weeks since the accident. I thought that it would be completely healed by now. Apparently there is some nerve damage. I guess I should be patient and give it some more time. And thankful that it was not worse than it was.....
Things have been really quiet here in my little corner of the teddy world. Hopefully I have not been out of the "public eye" to long.
I will try to keep things updated with my new teddy bear project.

UPDATE ON MY ACCIDENT.
MY WOUND IS HEALING ALONG FINE.
I FEEL LIKE THE DR TOOK THE STITCHES OUT TOO SOON. IT WAS ONLY THE 8TH DAY FROM THE ACCIDENT WHEN HER TOOK THEM OUT. VERY PAINFUL... MY HUSBAND SAID IT WAS STILL OPEN IN A COUPLE PLACES, AND WAS BLEEDING. I COULD NOT LOOK... THE DR PUT ON SOME TAPE THAT HOLDS IT TOGETHER WHILE IT HEALS. SOME OF IT HAS COME OFF AND THE SCAR THAT IS EXPOSED, IS SO UGLY....
I HAVE SOME NUMBNESS IN MY ELBOW AND FOREARM. THE DR SAY THAT IT WAS FROM THE TRAMA/DAMAGE TO THE NERVE. BUT SHOULD HAVE THE FEELING BACK IN A COUPLE MONTHS.
I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON SOME CANDLES, SOAPS AND JEWELRY. THE SOAPS AND CANDLES ARE ON MY NEW SISTER SITE. SCHAUTTENBAUMSOAP.COM

my accident

sorry for the sloppy penmanship with this letter for i am typing with one hand.
this last sunday night my husband and i were on our property in fredericksburg tx where we plan to build our dream home, cutting a dead tree that fell on the fench. being the tomboy i am i came up behind james without his knowing to stand on the log he was cutting with the chainsaw. i slipped off the log and fell onto the chainsaw while it was still running. cutting into my arm right above the elbow. grabbed my arm knowing it was bad, holding it as tight as possible, james took off his shirt and tied it tightly around my upper arm. threw me in the truck and flew down the highway at 120 mph at times to the hospital 10 miles away. i guess i was in shock, i really did not have much pain. they imidiatly gave me a tetnis booster and started me on i-v's of demoral, and a antibiotic. i felt so bad for my husband. he was soooo upset. after the evluation and cleaning the wound, it took the dr 1 1/2 hours just to sew it up. the wound, i never really did see, just when we were in the truck i could see where i was holding it was not covered. it was awful.... blahh
it is 5 inches long and around 1 inch deep, with 25 stitches on the top layer. i was thankful that the muscle was not cut. but i have some numbness on my forearm. will be seeing my local dr today or tomorrow. i appologize if this was graphic, but that is what happened. please pray for my healing. so i can go back to my working, on my teddy bears.

Yeah! I have finally completed updating and transforming my website. I am happy with the way it has turned out. I'm sure there will be a flub-up here and there, but I tried my best...
The weather here has made it a lot easier to work out in my shop. I believe that the temparture is creeping up on 80 degrees today. Beautiful....I actually have my air-conditioner on out here!!

Wax Scented Dipped Bear

Well, I have been pondering the idea of making a wax scented dipped bear. I know to some people it sounds like a cruel and unusual punishment. But to me, for a person who enjoys every aspect of arts & crafts. Thinks that it might not be such a bad idea. I have researched the process and believe that if I do it correctly. It could be something interesting. I would make it from a bear that I made of my own design. And of course I would use a synthetic fur. In this day and time with the economy as it is, we have to do what we think will be welcome to several different formats as in collectors. And a product that I will enjoy producing that will be affordable and collectible.

Through trial after trial, I have begun my own design of
"Wire Wrap Jewelry!"
Boy what fun it is. Every piece is handmade by me. The cross is wire shaped with lead free solder inserted, the wrapped with more wire and heart shape again made from wire. Beauty of the Autumn

The fall has been a somewhat reflective time of the year for me. The dog days of summer are gone and the cool mornings have arrived here in Odessa. Earlier I had posted a picture of my first beautiful rose of the Spring. Temperatures dropped down below freezing last night. So after pampering my last 3 roses left on the bush, I decided to clip them and bring them into the warm house and see if I can enjoy their beauty inside. One of the roses were partly opened, the others are buds. I am hoping that they will display their beauty for me soon.....

Yaaa! We have finally made the decision.
We have purchased some land just about 7 miles outside of Fredericksburg TX.
I am so excited.! My hubby and I went down there a week ago and began clearing off some of the acreage. I believe that it is 4.5 acres. It is a beautiful plot of land, with big'o oak trees. There is a bit much of brambles to deal with tho.... Bramble is a long thorny vine, that likes to crawl and tangle it'self in everything! James' arms and legs are soooo tore up from the brambles. He tells everyone that he was "herding cats".

Well, my husband and I went on a little vacation to Fredericksburg Tx again this Labor Day weekend. We love it there.....
My sister in-law treated me to a fabulous lunch at a tea-room called "The Peach Tree." Suzi ordered the quiche with chilled avocado soup. I went straight for the dessert! A Russian Creme! A custard with fresh cream and sour cream, served with strawberries and strawberry sauce. YUMM!
